About this course
This course explains the fundamental concepts of Internet of Things (IoT). It explains the differences between IoT and Industry 3.0 technologies. The scope of this course includes technologies designed for individual to a macro view of IoT applied over a city-size landscape known as 'smart cities'.
The course examines cities as entire ecosystems based on sensors that collect readings to monitor and manage the city-sized entities. While IoT smart technologies provide convenience, these also bring along various security/political/economic challenges.
The course provides in-depth surveys and analysis of these challenges, such as privacy issues, job replacements, etc. Finally the course provides country-specific case studies including the US, China and Singaporean.

- Discuss the devices and hardware necessary for the emergence of IoT.
- Explain the IoT-facilitated connection between the physical real world and cyberspace.
- Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using “smart” devices
- Explain the importance of sensors in operating a smart city.
- Discuss the different uses of big data.
- Discuss how IoT is applied to social media technologies.
- Discuss the different ways in which devices, software, app and hardware associated with the IoT can be abused.
- Explain the security fears in using the IoT and the associated issues of hacking and invasion of privacy.
- Discuss the points for and against the idea of privacy.
- Explain the importance of laws/regulations/courts in safeguarding privacy in the US.
- Discuss Chinese plans for utilising IoT and big data and the differences in their approach from that of the US.
- Discuss how IoT and its social/political/economic implications are being discussed in Singapore.
Assessment
You must complete an online quiz with a passing score of 50% (i.e., 5 out of 10 questions). You will be given multiple attempts to achieve the passing score. The system will only capture the highest of the scores.
